Molloy Dominates St. Thomas Aquinas

Molloy absolutely dominated both sides of the diamond today, earning them a 17-2 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas at Provident Bank Park in Pomona, NY. Molloy improves to 11-18(5-4 ECC) while top seeded St. Thomas falls to 16-8(6-3 ECC).
After the Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Lions exploded for 14 runs over the next six. Juan Borbon went 2-2 with two walks, scored four runs and four RBI’s, three of which off a bases loaded triple to spark the offensive outburst in third inning. Shortstop Kris Kelly only had one hit, but walked three times and scored all four times he reached base. The 7-9 hitters were key for Molloy’s success, going 5-9 with eight runs scored, eight runs driven in and five walks.
Junior righty Max Schonfeld improved to 4-3 on the season, scattering eight hits, six K’s and walking none over seven strong innings. Peter Vath and Marco Martino came in for the last two innings to complete Molloy’s victory.
Both teams almost had identical amount of hits, but Molloy’s patience at the plate allowed for 12 base runners to reach base via walk. If the Spartans could have kept the walk rate down, this game could have been a lot closer than it actually was. Molloy will take on St. Thomas again today in a double-header at Stony Brook.
