The Old Westbury Panthers out-pitched Manhattanville College in a 3-2 pitchers duel on Tuesday at Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. In this non-conference game, Old Westbury improves to 8-11, while the Valiants drop to 5-15.
Manhattanville opened the third inning with three straight singles, allowing them to jump ahead with a 2-0 lead. Old Westbury answered back in the bottom of the third with an RBI fielders choice by Centerfielder, Jacob Coners. It stayed 2-1, until the bottom of the sixth, where the Panthers pounced to a 3-2 lead. The two runs were scored from a sac-fly and an error from the shortstop.
Frank DiMaria improves to 2-1, tossing seven innings, striking out six and walking none. He was able to limit the damage by averaging one hit per inning, three of which came in the third. Stephen Chapter came in to throw a perfect eighth, followed by a perfect ninth by Alex DiSanto to finish the game.
Not much offense in this game, only 10 hits combined for both teams and only three by Old Westbury, but five walks and seven stolen bases for the Panthers put pressure on Manhattanville all game and played small ball. Old Westbury will take on Yeshiva and St. Joseph’s College this weekend, both being conference games.
